I watched Michael Mann's "Public Enemies" (DP: Dante Spinotti) last night for the first time and was struck by a very unconventional, yet effective (I think), cut.  In the opening sequence (video below), Dillinger is driven up to the entrance of a prison and escorted out of the car.  The scene is established in a long lens medium wide shot (probably 200mm from 150' away...Note: standard 35mm dimensions, not 2/3").  After a few steps/seconds, it cuts to a wide angle lens closeup (24-2mm from...

Every summer, I pick one or two films I can't wait to see.  Some of them are conventional blockbuster choices (Transformers, Star Trek) and others are guaranteed to deliver (Dark Knight, etc.).  The obvious choice for this summer is Chris Nolan's new epic "Inception".  But if you're interested in an indie-epic all its own, check out "Animal Kingdom", directed by David Michod.  The early Scorsese-esque fan favorite at Sundance (and Dramatic winner) has some of the best looking stuff I've seen in...

Mike from thesubstream's "Film Lab" have some tips regarding a few in-camera trick shots, specifically... the dolly zoom.

I can't help but feel this video is genius.  In the beginning it seems CGI, but quickly you realize its all done with practical camera and effects.  Shows what can be done when you are clever.

Zeiss recently debuted their Compact Prime Lens set at NAB.  The best part: no mount modifications or adapters necessary!  Zacuto has done one better with their new DSLR Baseplate system.  Previous rigs had unwanted play when using the follow focus.  "Zacuto's new DSLR Baseplate System, debuting at the NAB show in Vegas, mounts to the camera and lens using the standard 1/4 20" screw and ¼ 20 lens support, which gives you two mounting points for rock solid support to the camera & attached prime...

An oldie but a goodie.  Whoever made this video totally nailed what it feels like to be on the receiving end of irrational productions.

I think this is a fun new product from lite panels.   There are clearly some important specs still being left off this announcement, such as FC readings at different distances, initial lumens, and a better sense of the nature of this light.  Can it spot and flood like a fresnel or is this just another soft source in a round housing?  Hopefully this will be a nice step forward for LEDs and the slow but steady death of tungsten lighting.
